180 Days Forest to food: Day 25

There has been lots more cutting trees, piling firewood and hauling brush going on! I’ll post pictures in another day or two. For those who live in the area you should come drive by, it is looking like a totally different place!

There WAS a large patch of trees all small and just kind of a mess, between our yard and the neighbors.

Well that is now mostly gone except a pussy willow, a few smaller pine trees, a couple clusters of birch because they are one of my favorite trees 😁😜 and a decent size maple. With a bit more cleaning up this is going to be the start of a food forest that will also have a nice sitting area in the middle eventually and who knows what else. This will be an area for beauty as much as function and production. So this will make for some fun to watch grow over the next few years!

I haven’t been doing good taking pictures of things lately but the peas I planted a few days ago started popping up yesterday … they are fun!

Even if you aren’t going to garden, if you have children, especially 3-10yr old zone, get a package of peas next time you get to a store and plant them. They are so cool to watch come up and the kids will be impressed! You can give a whole science lesson there … math too for young ones, counting how many are up every so often, for older make estimates for daily growth and track, average how many sprout a day, figure fractions/% that come up daily, research how many pod average on a plant and figure how many could grow in a season etc.

So about 7:30am I was watering and noticed 11 peas were just peeking out of the soil woohoo! By around 11 there were 21 but I could see many spots the soil was raised so knew more were coming!

By 2pm I counted 39! Mid evening Avalon counted around 50, I forget the exact number.

This morning there were tons! I remembered at noon to take a picture and count … I got 104 😮

Makayla and I also planted some rhubarb! I would LOVE some ideas for using rhubarb because the only I can think of is strawberry rhubarb pie! Haha.

I was doing some reading on what rhubarb is good for health wise. I was really surprised to read it is good for keeping away macular degeneration, this runs in my family so I was pretty excited to learn this! It also has lots of vitamins C & K as well as calcium, is good for heart health, diabetes, and weight management among many others! I’m still researching, I’ll try to remember to share as I learn more.

If you would like to grow some rhubarb you can get seed or do like us and get some rootstock to get a faster harvest.

The Ameraucana eggs are now into their 7th day incubating so almost 1/3 of the way to hatching 😍 I plan to candle them in a couple days 😁

I put in an order for our next batch of eggs. I’m crazy excited for them!!! I’ll give more details soon because these need their own post!
